Apple to allow third-party app stores

In a move that could benefit NFT and crypto apps, Apple reportedly plans to enable the installation of apps from external sources outside of its own App Store on iPhones and iPads. The changes are being made in response to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, which requires tech companies to fully comply with restrictions by 2024.

According to Bloomberg, the rollout of support for external apps from third-party sources and marketplaces will initially begin only in Europe to comply with the new law. However, the functionality could be expanded to other territories depending on whether those countries adopt similar regulations.

The reported changes come amid growing pushback to Apple’s closed ecosystem, which not only philosophically clashes with Web3’s decentralized ethos but also has led to restrictions around the ways that apps can utilize NFT assets.

Epic Games launches metaverse programming language, Verse

Epic Games is expanding its metaverse campaign into the world of programming. The Unreal Engine developer has launched Verse, a new web3 programming language for the metaverse.

According to a presentation prepared by Epic Games, Verse focuses on five key principles that the company believes will be key to building the metaverse. Like its web2 3D tech platform, Epic has made Verse open-source. The language is focused on enabling the creation of social interactions in a shared real-time 3D environment and supporting an open economy governed by rules and with no corporate overloads.

The open-source product will also be available for all programmers, artists, and designers. Verse also seeks to support interoperable content with live updates of running code, while also leveraging operational standards from multiple game engines including Unity.
